What is encryption?

Encryption is the process of encoding data and decryption is the process of changing it back to its original form. It is the most effective way to achieve data security during the transmission of data. An algorithm is applied to each letter or symbol to encode it into a different form so it can’t be read or used by unauthorised users. Authorised users are given a key that allows them to decode the data.

Standards

Some common encryption standards are:

  • PGP – Pretty Good Privacy
  • DES – Data encryption standard
  • SSL – Secure Socket Layer
  • WEP - Wired Equivalent Privacy
  • WPA - Wi-Fi Protected Access
  • Mobile phones
  • Bluetooth

No encryption method is unbreakable but they do act as a deterrent to potential hackers.
