What is Hypermedia?

  • Hypermedia allows a user to electronically organise data (text, numeric, graphic, audio, video).
  • Hypermedia offers interactivity to the users, allowing them to see what they want to see next.
  • An example is a Hyperlink – Any data type, which clicked on, will take you to a different place.
  • There is no prescribed structure - it has a free format as defined by the designer.
  • The user specifies the path by choosing their own links. (It is possible to get lost if a clear map is not provided, or links don’t work or are incorrect).
  • Hypermedia contrasts with the broader term multimedia, which may be used to describe non-interactive linear presentations as well as hypermedia.
  • The first hypermedia system was the Aspen Movie Map, while the first truly universal hypermedia was Hypercard.
  • The Internet is a prime example of a forum where hypermedia is constantly used. Any picture or photograph which can be clicked on and provides a link to another site uses hypermedia.
